It has not been a quiet summer! But it has been good. Three major projects have been launched and are in full swing. Here are some updates.

Respectful Workplaces in the Arts

Much of the work on Respectful Workplaces in the Arts (RWA) over the summer has been in the wings.

  • building the website (launch in mid-September)
  • developing RWA ads and creating the web banners and short video for performing, literary and visual arts organizations and artists to use (adding their own logos) in their programmes, at their venues, at vernissages and book launches, and on their websites to state their support for RWA
  • hiring a consultant to undertake a report, with recommendations, on Reporting and Investigating Mechanisms on Harassment in the Performing, Literary and Visual Arts (Jeanne Lesage from Lesage Arts Management has been contracted and is at work!)
  • developing a draft national Code of Conduct (circulating to the sector for feedback – and eventual buy-in)
  • organizing the consultations with equity-seeking groups across the country (ongoing)
  • writing and editing the HR Tool on Harassment for CHRC’s HR Management Toolkit (release date in September)
  • gathering examples of training resources on harassment in Canada and in other countries (ongoing).

We’ve made a lot of progress and the results will continue to roll out over the coming weeks.

Talent to Lead - Year 3 Call for Applications

Talent to Lead www.talenttolead.ca T2L Year 3 is now receiving applications. Its focus is on selecting 20 cultural leaders from Indigenous, racialized and official language minority communities across Canada to participate in the program.

As well as the mentorships and webinar training, this year there will be regional gatherings in late winter across the country to bring together participants from previous cohorts for a one-day learning exchange. The learning exchange will include training on harassment and an opportunity to discuss key issues impacting the sector today and form the basis for a white paper from the perspective of current cultural leaders across Canada.  Details to follow.

This professional development program is designed for mid-career cultural leaders seeking advancement in their career. T2L offers an opportunity to learn in a peer-group setting while also getting expert support from executive leaders in the field.

To date, 42 talented mid-career leaders from across the country and across the sector participated in T2L and 25% of T2L participants have since moved to executive level positions within cultural organizations.

Labour Market Information Study of the Cultural Labour Force

As announced in our recent press release, CHRC is moving forward with its second Labour Market Information (LMI) Study of the Cultural Labour Force. As in 2010, we are guided by a Steering Committee of leaders in the cultural sector, and receive advice from a national cross-sector Advisory Committee. We are again working with the Conference Board of Canada. A paramount concern of this study is that it reflect the reality of the cultural sector and identify the trends – combining raw data with insights from cultural workers and leaders across the country.

The Steering Committee met with the Conference Board consultants in early August and reviewed the work plan with them. The Advisory Committee will meet by conference call in late September. The first steps include reviewing and assembling the most recent labour market information for the cultural sector (e.g. the Cultural Satellite Account, various financial performance surveys covering cultural industries, the business register from Statistics Canada, as well as relevant labour profiles of culture sector employees, including Statistics Canada’s National Household Survey, Labour Force Survey, SEPH and the Job Vacancy and Wage Survey).

An online survey will follow. CHRC, the Steering Committee and the Advisory Committee will be promoting this broadly and widely to get as accurate a picture as possible of the cultural labour force. More on this in the coming weeks.

Arts Futures Workshops Wind Up After a Successful Run

Over the summer months, Interactive Ontario and CHRC, with Canada Council funding from the Digital Strategy Fund, have joined forces to present 10 Arts Futures workshops – 5 in Ottawa and 5 in Toronto (which were also live-streamed) – to help arts organizations build their digital skills, and to offer artists and art organizations a chance to network with DM producers in the hope of creating new connections and collaborations.

Speakers from Canada (e.g. former CHRC Board member Ian Kelso on Augmented Reality Arts and Culture, and Lise Jackson on VR Storytelling) and from other countries (e.g. Carlotta di Ninni from the UK on Blockchain and Music, and Capacity Interactive in New Yore on Digital Advertising) shared their expertise, knowledge and wisdom with the participants in informal settings that allowed for questions, answers and conversations. A highlight was the Closing Keynote by Jarryd Huntley on Art & Video Games.

Game development is an incredibly multidisciplinary field, bringing together creators with various backgrounds. Without formal training, it can be intimidating starting to learn skills in a new discipline. With experience teaching artists how to program in his book Game Programming for Artists, with teaching non-artists how to make art in his game Art Club Challenge(iOS), and with his background in education, Jarryd Huntley will share tips and suggestions when exploring a new field. He’ll also offer practical advice on how to get started working in the medium of games.”

It has been a very satisfying and successful collaboration. CHRC is proud to have worked with IO on this innovative series – so relevant to arts organizations!

Talking Mentorship in Montreal

In early September, CHRC, along with la Chaire de gestion des arts de HEC et Diversité artistique Montréal, presented their mentorship programmes to Montreal artists and arts organizations. The session focussed on artists and managers from Indigenous, culturally diverse and official language minority communities. The deadlines for the 3 programmes are:

  • Mentorat artistique (DAM) October 1st
  • Mentorat culturel (HEC)  November 1st
  • Talent de leader (CRHSC)  October 1st

Banff Leadership Courses

CHRC is working with the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity on our Talent to Lead project. We share common objectives on several fronts – one of them being cultural leadership and Indigenous leadership. In light of that, we draw your attention to Banff’s offerings in these areas….
