Managing and Mentoring


The baby boom generation is steadily leaving the workforce or moving to reduced hours and/or different working relationships. Non-profits cannot compete with wages and benefits offered in the private and public sectors. In addition, younger workers are looking for ways to maintain work-life balance as they enter and move up in the workforce. All of these changes put pressure on organizations (including arts and heritage organizations) to recruit and retain skilled leaders and workers.

This site is full of resources to aid managers in their work, help them improve their skills and recruit and mentor new talent.

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) has worked with organizations and cultural managers from around the country to develop the tools needed to support the sector. These tools include:

  • A mentorship strategy

CHRC's Role

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening Canada's cultural workforce and improving the HR environment within the cultural sector. One of CHRC’s goals is to strengthen management in the cultural sector. Mentorship plays an important role in achieving this goal.

Experienced cultural managers and mentors representing cultural organizations from around the country with a wealth of experience and knowledge developed a competency chart and profile for cultural managers and one for mentors. The harts and profiles are innovative learning tools designed to assist producers managers and mentors working in the cultural sector.

The Cultural Human Resources Council strives to be at the centre of vision and forward thinking in the areas of cultural human resources development. We hope that this online Guide and resources will help you to achieve your professional vision, by providing a map of the skills and training you need to find success in your chosen field.

These tools, a reliable source for competencies for managers and mentors in the cultural industry, can be used to:
